I always believe that organic traffic is the best source of traffic where I will always target to achieve at least 50% of my traffic are organic.
At the same time, I think you and I can agree that SEO is not a one-night-job thing where you will be able to see a result from a great SEO effort after a tight sleep.
So, it takes time and if your blog is new, you need to have patient but this doesn’t mean that you need to stop thinking about getting traffic to your blog in the early days.
Check out my recent traffic below. If I am only relying on Google traffic alone, imagine how much opportunity that I had wasted?
So, using blog comments to drive traffic is not impossible as long as you do it the right way at the right place.
Here is my strategy.
Locate your source
You need to know where you want to comment.
To do this, go to Google and start searching for blogs within your niche.
Keep them in a list where the way I do it, is to subscribe to their RSS using Google Reader Feedly.
An example of list will be like mine below:
By having a list like this, you will be able to see whether who had just made a new post. For instance in this scenario, I know that John Chow had just made a new post and I can immediately go read his content and drop a comment if I have something to say.
This is how I use the RSS as my blog commenting strategy.
Finding the right source
Getting the list of blogs is not good enough. You need to know how to pick the right ones.
Here are my tips on how to pick the right blog to comment.
- Blogs with high traffic. I prefer to comment a high traffic blog over a high PR blog. As you might had already know from the myth of blog commenting, PR juice is not the key. You can use the Alexa ranking to determine the traffic although it is not completely accurate.
- Blogs where authors reply to comments. There are certain blogs where the writer has to reply to comment even the guest blogger. This sort of blog is good to comment because you will get to interact with the writer himself.
- Blogs with CommentLuv. This is not necessary but I find it a bonus if you can get to comment on a CommentLuv enabled site. Apart from spreading your blog’s URL, you will also get to share your latest post where I find that has a better Click Through Rate.
- Don’t matter the NoFollow. Don’t spend time on the DoFollow or NoFollow thing. It is not going to do a big deal on SEO even if it is DoFollow. You might as well spend your time to look for more high traffic blog rather than looking for DoFollow blogs.
Check frequently
I always check my list. About 1-2 hours, I will refresh the list or wait for it to auto-refresh.
This will enable me to be the first few to comment.
You should know very well that if your comments fall below #5, there is no traffic for you basically.
So, check frequently and always try to be the first to do it.
Read the post
You got me here right. Don’t just go into the post and drop a “Thank you” and pray for traffic. You should know by now how blog authors usually moderate a comment.
As a result, read the content and make sure you know what they are writing.
If you don’t have any comment, don’t force yourself to comment. There is always next time rather than you leave a poor comment and get a bad impression.
Write something meaningful
There are few things that you need to take note here when commenting.
- Never repeat after the author. It is annoying when you repeat what the author just said. Doing so will only make the author has no idea on how to reply you.
- Be resourceful. If the author writes about a list of 10 items on how to generate traffic and you know another 3 or 4 more. Comment them in. This is a good way to do a good blog comment.
- Ask questions. If you are not sure about the topic that the author writes, ask them. Or if you have decision-making problem between two tools that is related to what the author is writing, ask him/her to recommend.
- Be a friendly enemy. If an author writes about how well Google is and you would like to oppose him by showing how well you are without Google, comment there but be friendly. You only have to be enemy to his content, not his real person. I’m sure professional blogger accepts negative comments as a challenge but remember, don’t flame anyone.
- Be funny. If you are some humorous person, be funny there as long as it is related to the content. Don’t comment on something totally out of the story although it is funny.
- Proof reading your comment. Ensure that the author knows what you are commenting. I received comments from readers where I totally don’t understand what they are trying to express and ended up have to delete the comment.
Did you see that I had generated quite a number of traffic from Quicksprout? I only dropped one comment and it just works. Here is the sample of comment which I had written.
The reasons why I am generating good traffic from this post itself are:
- I’m the first.
- I get Neil’s attention to comment.
- I get his reader’s attention to comment.
- Quicksprout has a good amount of traffic.
Share the post
The last thing that you ever want to do is to share the great post.
I’d prefer to share it over Twitter simply because I get to mention the blog author while tweeting so that he/she knows that I love the content.

I initially started with Comment luv blogs, and I got two links from one comment. When I got 3 approved comments on the blog they gave me a Dofollow link 🙂
I also give back favor to my commentators by commenting on their blogs.

That actually depends on the blog’s setting for CommentLuv Premium. For now, all my comment links will only be dofollow if my readers share my post out. 😉

Yeps Aditya but not every high PR sites have good traffic. Probably we should look into Alexa ranking instead, shouldn’t we?

Organic traffic is surely the best source of traffic and SEO is a long term process. Blog commenting is a great way not only to interact but also to get some good traffic for a blog. Thanks for sharing these tips. I feel not proofreading the comment is one of the common mistakes that are being made.
Alan Tay says
Thanks for dropping by, Richa. I agree as well that blog commenting is a great way to interact as well. For instance, this comment here 😉

I think you have made it nice and clear how to get the benefits of commenting. I like the idea of commenting first, at least one can get your title of your blog post to many people. When ever making a comment, its a good idea to add some input and some extra points, at least this way your comment will be valued and seen as a resource rather than a liability.

If Neil share how to earn the early traffic from social media (I read his guide on driving first 1,000 visits),
Alan share how to earn early traffic from Blog commenting!
In fact, it’s a bit funny here. I reach your blog here from twitter (social media) and reading your “blog commenting” strategy. lol
Anyway, your blog commenting sent 94 visits, bigger than 67 visits from Google organic source. It’s quite interesting!
Thanks for sharing, Alan!
Alan Tay says
I read that too, Jeco. In fact, I am trying out his guide on Twitter.
Yeps, I have a higher visit from blog commenting but I guess that is just temporary. In the end, search engine is going to take over all the traffic based on my experience in building a blog.
Thanks for dropping by there.

I usually speak my mind, contradict and in very few cases praise the author- always works. A surefire way to elicit a response is to argue! of course one must be polite and use the right tone, else things are not going to work in your favor. Nice post-thanks for sharing.
Alan Tay says
Exactly that is what I think we should do when commenting – Speak from your mind 😉
Thanks for your comment there 😉

Hi Alan! Although we do have an underlying motive when leaving a comment, I personally enjoy learning a great deal of information from other bloggers like you who have come a long way in the industry. SEO and blog commenting are great techniques but I must say that both must be done in moderation and on a regular basis to eventually see remarkable results 🙂

Thanks for your commment there, Joy 😉

I typically try and spend 1-2 hour/week on blog commenting. I like using dropmylink.com to search for all type of blog with specific keywords.

Blog commenting is the most effective method of increase traffic and backlinks, but its a big problem to find Dofollow blog.
Alan Tay says
Thank you for your comment. I’m sure most high traffic blog doesn’t allow dofollow and as a result to that, I don’t think nofollow or dofollow doesn’t matter much.
